Trump Fires Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State

President Donald Trump fired his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, on Tuesday without telling him personally, announcing on Twitter that he would replace him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo. Tillerson was in Africa. And Trump said he will appoint a woman, Gina Haspel, to lead the CIA for the first time in history. Tillerson was unaware he was going to be fired, wanted to continue as SoS and said he did not know why he was fired.

Trump tweeted: "Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!" tweeted President Trump.

Rex Tillerson is the CEO of ExxonMobil. His ties around the globe include a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said he and Tillerson had been talking about this for a long time but he made the decision himself. "When you look at the Iran deal, I think it’s terrible. I guess he thought it was okay. I wanted to either break it or do something, and he felt a little bit differently. So we were really not thinking the same. I'm really at a point where we're getting very close to having the Cabinet and other things that I want. But I think Mike Pompeo will be a truly great secretary of State. I have total confidence in him.”

Tillerson apparently hired multiple senior staffers who worked against Trump. Tillerson also didn't want to name Jerusalem Israel's capital, wanted to stay in the Paris Accord and often undermined and insulted the President publicly and privately.
